In the Spring of 2007, in conversation with Lane Davies, the decision was
made by Albert Cauz, Headmaster of the Webb School in Bell Buckle, to make
the town of Bell Buckle, Tennessee, a destination for Shakespeare in the
region.
A coalition was quickly assembled, involving some of the most respected institutions in the area. These included the Webb School as
venue and infrastructure, the town of Bell Buckle for Marketing, logistics, and business support, the Tennessee Repertory Theatre for
design, administrative and artistic support, Middle Tennessee State
University for educational, grant, and material support, and Valhalla
Shakespeare, assisting with legal and development issues.
It was decided that a production of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream would
be produced one year later, on the campus of the Webb School.
That dream became a reality in June of 2008. More than 1200 people attended our five evenings of A Midsummer Night's Dream, surprising skeptics and supporters alike. It is the Tennessee Shakespeare Festival's firm belief that Bell Buckle is an ideal place for a regional Shakespeare festival, a place where families can escape the pace of city life, enjoy good food and drink, and relax under summer stars with the timeless stories, words and characters of the world's greatest playwright. |
